Putting Yourself First

Putting Yourself First

Therapy

Have you ever put your own goals and dreams on pause in order to make someone else happy?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to make your friends and family happy.

In fact, that’s a great trait. But at the same time, sometimes you need to be your own best friend and put yourself first.

Think About Goals Daily

What do you want to achieve today?

Asking yourself that one question every morning can help you put things into perspective.

If there is one task (big or small) you truly want to cross off your list today, you should try your best to get it done.

A big part of self care is prioritizing what makes you happy – whether it’s writing in your journal, going on a walk or watching a movie with your family.

Take a Pause

Have you ever said yes to someone simply out of habit without really thinking it through?

Again, when you care about someone, it can be so easy to say yes to everything automatically.

When you do something often enough, it can easily become a habit. Some habits can be tough to break but not impossible.

The next time someone asks you to do something, take a moment to pause and think it through.

If you can’t decide on the spot you can say something along the lines of…

“Thank you so much for thinking of me. Let me check my calendar and get back to you.”

That way, you can take your time to think about the pros and cons.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to being honest with yourself and staying true to who you are.

“Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to ourselves that we would give to others.”- Christopher Germer
