Course Description

Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is an evidence-based therapy used in the treatment of tic disorders. This training will focus on core components of CBIT that you can implement in your own clinical work when you have a client with tics. There will be opportunities for practice as well as a demonstration with an emphasis on specific strategies that have been shown to be effective in helping people to better manage their tics.

Educational Goals

  1. Participants will be able to understand and apply functional interventions when working with clients with tics.
  2. Participants will be able to understand and apply habit reversal training when working with clients with tics.
  3. Participants will be able to describe and apply modifications to CBIT for a younger population.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to identify at least one example of a simple motor tic, complex motor tic, simple vocal tic, and complex motor tic.
  2. Participants will be able to state the two core components and three additional elements of CBIT.
  3. Participants will be able to identify the three rules for creating a competing response.
  4. Participants will be able to state one potential benefit to including a behavioral reward system when working with children with tics.
  5. Participants will be able to name three diagnostic features of functional tics that differ from other tic disorders.

Rachel Pechter, OTR/L’s is a licensed psychiatric occupational therapist.  She has experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with tics.  In 2016, she became certified in CBIT, and she began working with people with Tourette and other tic disorders in her private practice. She has provided consultation to other clinicians becoming certified in CBIT and is on the Northern California Board of the Tourette Association of America (TAA).
