Recognizing the Grief Our Clients Carry: How to Listen to and Talk with Grievers to Create Safe Spaces for Healing

Hosted by Palo Alto Therapy

Tuesday, August 15th, 2023 | 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
*2 Hour Video Presentation*

Course Description

The traditional “5 stages of grief” model is outdated and lacks sound empirical evidence. More is needed than the 5 stages to help clients with their complicated grief from multiple losses, disenfranchised grief and inadequate support. This calls for a re-examination of how loss and grief are defined. Learn to recognize the 7 areas of our clients’ lives that are impacted by grief: Cognitive, Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, Social, Family, and Work. You will also learn how to differentiate between symptoms of grief and trauma, how traumatic grief can complicate grief, and the criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder.

Educational Goals

1. Equip clinicians with the knowledge to understand grief, mourning, and loss and recognize the signs/symptoms of grief.

2. Examine Traumatic Grief and the criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define at least 3 types of grief.
  2. Describe 5 different types of loss.
  3. Identify at least 5 signs/symptoms of grief.
  4.  Define the criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder.
  5. Describe the risks of Prolonged Grief Disorder.

Debi Jenkins Frankle, LMFT and Grief Specialist. She and her husband, Mark Frankle, LMFT, are the co-founders of the Calabasas Counseling and Grief Center.

Debi focused her work with her clients on grief more than 25 years ago after experiencing levels of personal grief that she didn’t even realize she was drowning in. She sought to learn more about how to help grievers manage the tsunamis of grief, and has made it her mission to help others learn too. She is the founder of Private Practice Grief Workshops and Trainings for Mental Health Clinicians as well as the FB group for therapists: Private Practice Grief, and is an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University in The Graduate School of Education and Psychology.
