Mary Katherine is a warm and engaging therapist who is passionate about helping clients achieve joyful and fulfilling lives. Her compassionate and collaborative approach, in combination with her experience and training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), will help you manage unwanted symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress in order to live each day with more joy and productivity.
Mary Katherine has several years of experience helping adult and teen clients effectively manage anxiety, stress, worry, depression, rumination, procrastination, social anxiety, panic attacks, specific phobias, and obsessive-compulsive behavior OCD. She utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) strategies, as well as self-compassion and mindfulness techniques.
She completed her clinical internship with the University of Michigan Health System and was a member of both the Anxiety Disorders Treatment Clinic and Depression Clinic teams. She completed an advanced 28-week clinical skills training mentorship in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for anxiety and received specialty training through the Beck Institute in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for depression. She also facilitated therapy groups in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, Behavioral Activation, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Anxiety and Insomnia.
Mary Katherine received her Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Wake Forest University and graduated with honors from the University of Michigan with her Master of Clinical Social Work degree.
While Mary Katherine is pursuing her Clinical Social Work License (LCSW) she is under the direct supervision of Ernest Schmidt, LCSW owner and founder of Palo Alto Therapy.

Clinical social workers provide mental health services for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders in individuals, families, and groups. Their goal is to enhance and maintain their patients’ physical, psychological, and social function.
Clinical social workers must have a master’s or doctorate degree in social work, with an emphasis on clinical experience. They must undergo a supervised clinical field internship and have at least 2 years of postgraduate supervised clinical social work employment. Clinical social workers are approved providers in most insurance and managed care plans, and practice in the following settings:
- Private practice
- Medical facilities (e.g., hospitals)
- Mental health clinics
